Exchanging ideas - child education n. 54

Toys and play

"At truth I tell you that if you don't do as the children, you won't go to heaven" (Matthew 18,3).

At our change of ideas on the Toys and Play Project, we talked to you at the last two number on the importance of playing for the development of the child. We saw that the child plays because she/he needs it and it is not only for fun as most adults think. And we saw that is also necessary to search and create the spaces and moments of playing at the communities.

At this number, we want to explain well which is the type of play that we are talking. It is the playing that gives opportunity to the child to freely choose:

  • how he/she wants to play: if it is to make believe, to cross jump, in a circle with other children; if he/she wants to hear a story or draw; or play of any other thing that he/she invents;
  • if he/she wants to play alone or with other children;
  • If he/she wants to enter at the playing or if he/she prefers to watch the playing of other children, if she doesn't bother this playing.

We are valuing the playing at that who commands the activity is the child. He/she plays because he/she wants to play and not to satisfy a desire, order or a goal of an adult. The role of the toy maker or adult that is with the children it is to be watching to give the necessary limits to the security of them and also to participate, propose playing, but not imposing like, with who and when the children will play.

So it is necessary to permit the free choose by the child that is stimulated and defended at the Toys and Play Project, because it is an activity that promotes the child development.

And how is the playing at your community? Are the children finding spaces to play? Have you already promoted some type of playing at the Life Celebration Day? Are there already toy makers?

To animate the playing we are going to give some suggestions:

TOYS AND PLAYING

Follow the path

Material: chalk, stick of wood, or a piece of brick.

How to Play: draw at the ground several types of paths: straight lines, curves, making circles, forming squares, circles. The toy maker invites the children to walk on the drawing slowly, fast; with the hands on the head, in the waist; at the tip toes, putting one foot in front of the other and at other ways that you and the children will invent.

String of toys for babies

Material: wood, hammer, and nails, string. Small and colorful things that make noise and not are dangerous like: small shells, cloth, and plastic tops;

How to do: make with the wood a trapezoid that stays up and a little bit away from the baby (almost 60-cm from the baby). Tie the things on the top part with a string. The part to tie can be longer for several babies to play.

How to play: put the top part in a cushion or soft fabric and the babies with the belly up in a way so that they can hi the toys with the hands and feet.

Ball

Material: newspaper, paper or plastic bags to put at the sock, old sock, needle, line or string.

How to do: crush the paper or plastic making a ball making a ball. Fill the point of the sock with this ball. Hold the other part roll the ball once or twice and tie up well the ball with a string or a thick line. Turn the sock in a way that it covers the ball. Do it several times until the sock is very well covering the ball. Stitch it.
