Solidarity Act
Macapá - Amapá

Pastoral da Criança always has a true story to share. It is the case of Regina Tomé (support Pastoral da Criança) that tells us a solidarity act, where Pastoral da Criança made that a recently born child come back to his/her mother's arms.

"I was working on January 13th 2003 and my work was to take some blood of the mothers and their recently born babies to make VDRL (Venereal Disease Research Laboratory) and HIV at the maternity in Macapá. I arrived at a nursery to execute my function and I saw a mother without her baby and I asked her about her child and she began to cry, she cried a lot and that situation made pay a lot of attention and I asked: 'Why are you crying? Where is your child?' and she answered: My daughter I gave to the Minors' Court, I am not with her." Her name was Núbia, she was 19 years old and she was a single mother. I asked if she worked and who as the child's father. She said that she was not working because of the pregnancy and the father's child did not want to know about her. 'But, you are young, you can educate your daughter, assume her and feed her'. Therefore she, very sad, commented that she could not come back with her decision, thus the paper was already signed, delivering her daughter for adoption and later she complemented: 'I am very sad, I saw my daughter's little face, I see everybody leaving with their baby, I am resentful, but know there is no way out'. I turned to her and said: 'I make park of Pastoral da Criança, I'll see what I can do for you'. Quickly, I went to the nursery, I saw the child and she was really a beautiful girl. The mother had no financial condition, the baby had no clothes. I resolved to call Marineide Oliveira (Pastoral da Criança coordinator) and I reported the fact to her, obtaining a positive answer, that we would try to solve the problem, since every mother has the right to stay with her child. The baby's mother only cried and I said that it was necessary to be tough. Marineide got clothes for the baby and a weekly basic basket, that was donated by Carmel Sisters until the mother would get a job. Soon after, I talked to the maternity's director and she said that if the judge would free the case, the mother could take her baby. Marineide arrived at the maternity and went to the court together with Núbia to solve the question. I stayed at my job, very worried and emotionated. It was the first time I was passing through a situation like that, where the mother cried a lot. Everything end up in a happy way. Until now this child is with her mother. Really, Pastoral da Criança here at Amapá is every time more evoluted, it is benefic for the State, helps our children. On January 12th, Estefani (the baby's name) completed 1 year of life and since the beginning is being followed up by Pastoral da Criança. She is a healthy, happy and very well taken care of by her mother, the child. And I received marvelous news: I was invited by Núbia to be Estefani's - the baby that one day would had stayed without her mother - godmother. It is Pastoral da Criança uniting families and saving lives.
