CHILD LABOR ERADICATION PROGRAM (PETI)

According to International Labor Organization (ILO) and the International Program for Eradication of the Infantile Work (Ipec), there are 2,908,341 boys and girls, between 5 and 14 years old, that work all over Brazil, to contribute with the family income. In front of this problem was created the Child Labor Eradication Program - PETI, that today assists 810 thousand children, at 2,601 cities.

According to Child and Adolescent Statute, at its article 60: "It is prohibited any labor to minor below sixteen years old, only at the condition of apprentice, from fourteen years old."

PETI is destined to the eradication of the so-called worst forms of child labor, that are those considered dangerous, hazardous, unhealthy and degrading, regulamentated on the Rule n. 20 of Labor and Employment Ministry, such as: coal bunkers, potteries, cut of sugar cane, tobacco plantations and others.

Of the Families which children exert typical activities from the urban area, those will receive from PETI a monthly allowance worth R$ 40.00 per child, and those that exert typical rural activities receive R$ 25.00, for each child registered.

Besides the allowance, the program destines to the municipalities R$ 20.00 for rural areas and R$ 10.00 for the urban areas (per registered child or adolescent), for the development of Journey of Amplified School, at the after class period, with study, sport, artistic and cultural activities.

The program also previews a repass of resources to all municipalities for the development of actions that aim the amplification and income generation for the inscribed families, thus it would be not worth to take the children out of labor, but proportionate to the family conditions to keep the child out of the market labor.

The inscribed families at the program assume some compromises with the Federal Government, guaranteeing:

- the minimum frequency of 75% at the total period at school and amplified journey;
- the not return to the labor the children below 16 years old; and
- the participation at social - educative actions and of amplification and income generation.

The eradication of child labor must be responsibility of several society's segment. With articulated actions in partnership, the municipalities can develop activities that permit the divulging the rights of Children and Adolescent and take to the knowledge of parents and population in general on the benefits of education and the bad caused by the child labor, incentivating the population to denounce.

Pastoral da Criança contributes for the eradication of child labor, orienting families and incentivating them to participate at the local articulations, like Child Labor Eradication Municipal Forum, Tutor and Child and Adolescent Rights Councils, identifying focus of child labor and establishing partnerships.

Community Leader, when you identify children and adolescents working in activities considered dangerous, hard, unhealthy and degrading, talk and orient the family on the problems caused by the child labor and incentivate them to search for the Tutor Council of their municipality and to inscribe at some of the Federal Government, like Child Labor Eradication Program - PETI, School or Family Fellowship, and participate at Income Generation projects. This actions done by in an articulated form between Pastoral da Criança, Mayor, other entities, Forums and Councils can contribute for that children and adolescents instead of being at labor be at school.
