The National
Gratuitous Work for Misery and Hunger Overcoming
On October 12th to 19th, occurs
the Gratuitous Work Mobilization
week, a partnership between the COEB (Comitê de
Entidades no Combate à Fome e pela Vida – Entities
Committee at the Fight Against Hunger and for Life),
the CNBB Gratuitous Work and the Hunger Zero Program,
of the Government. On October 16th, the
World’s Food day, by initiative of FAO, it is previewed
a new phase of World’s Campaign of Fight Against
Hunger. On October 9th to 12th,
at Ministries’ Esplanade at Brasília, there will
be exposition and events around themes of Gratuitous
Work and mobilization for resources collection. On the
week October 13th to 19th, throughout
Brazil, each city or village is invited to mobilize,
to show that is done or pretend to do to overcome misery
and hunger at the region. On November and December will
be happening regional and state meetings for the preparing
of II Food and Security National Conference, to happen
at Olinda, Pernambuco State, on March 17th
to 20th 2004. The goal of this conference
will be to define a Food Security project for Brazil
and monitor (critically) Fome Zero.
Each Diocese is invited to do a significative gesture,
that motivate the followers to do something for those
that pass hunger (and suffer other needs), putting into
practice that is suggested by the Diretrizes Gerais
(General Directions) 2003-6 (157 e 177). For example,
there are dioceses that do a monthly mass (kilogram
mass) with the donation of foods and motivation for
gratuitous work. Others engage at "Natal sem Fome
– Christmas without Hunger" (Ação
Cidadania – Citizenship action). Others still have traditional
projects and others create something original. The motivation
for charity ask for signals, that implies resignations,
incentivate the sharing, motivate a different more simple
life style, without luxury or wastefulness.
The Gratuitous Work Episcopal Commission, presided
by Dom Luciano Mendes de Almeida, that is addressing
a meeting on October to program actions to be taken
by effect at the next two years. We are praying for
the full recovery of Dom Mauro Morelli that has so much
pledged for this cause. We want that Our Church be Samaritan,
compromised with the misery and hunger superaction,
convinced that "to participate at the construction
of a society constitutes one of the Brazilian Church’s
evangelizing action goals" (Directions, 156).
