| Pastoral da Criança commemorates 20 years
with pitched mass
On December 14th, the 200 thousand Pastoral
da Criança volunteers will celebrate the entity’s
20th anniversary. It will be a moment of great happiness
for the community leaders, coordinators, coordination
and capacitation crews, bishops, priest, and all the
partners and friends that, at this two decades, come
working together to reduce infant mortality, malnutrition,
illiteracy and social exclusion among followed up families.
Pastoral da Criança began as a small seed, at
Florestópolis, North of Paraná State.
At that year of 1983, the municipality had only 15 thousand
inhabitants, but the infant mortality was very high:
127 deaths per thousand children born alive. In few
years, the actions developed by Pastoral da Criança
leaders between families got to reduce this scene to
20 deaths per thousand (data from 1997).
Today, Pastoral da Criança is all over the country
and serves as a model for similar experience at other
14 countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia. In Brazil,
155 community leaders follow up almost 1.6 million and
1.1 million families, of 32 thousand communities, at
3,549 municipalities.
To celebrate this historical moment, on December 14th,
at 9 o’clock, will be performed a big Pitched Mass,
at Clube Atlético Paranaense Stadium, at Curitiba,
state of Paraná. The mass will be presided by
the CNBB President, Dom Geraldo Majela Agnelo, who was
the founder of Pastoral da Criança, together
with Dr. Zilda Arns. Concelebrate the mass priests and
bishops invited. After the Eucharistic celebration,
there will be presentation of folk groups. At their
dances and songs, they will express the culture of many
Brazilian regions.
The Pitched Mass will be open to Pastoral da Criança
volunteers and friends. But, because of the distance,
many people from faraway regions, like the North and
Northeast, will not be able to participate. Our suggestion
is the realization of commemorative events at their
own municipalities that get together the leaders for
prayers and festivities. Thus, it evitate expenses with
the money that can be used in actions that benefit the
community. The next edition of Jornal da Pastoral da
Criança will bring a special Encarta of entity’s
20 years, contending one three-day period for that the
families and leaderships can do their own anniversary
celebration.
