Barretos - São Paulo
Pastoral da Criança at the city of Embuaba was
born on October 11th and it was already gained triple
force, thus on September 30th 2003 was born the triplets:
Leonardo Fiocck, Glória Maria Fiocck e Iasmin
Fiocck, all with low weight. As they were born with
8 months of pregnancy, they stayed incubated for a month.
The parents, Sueli de Fátima Fiocck and José
Aparecido Fiocck, orange catcher, live with the daughter
12 years old in a small house with four rooms. They
receive help from the community, relatives and neighbors.
Pastoral da Criança that also, at this case,
have all the attention, love and dedication are following

In Brazil, we celebrate the "Mother's Day"
on the second Sunday of May; this year was on May 9th.
The "Mother's Day" it is not only day of party
and homenage to the mothers, but it must be also an
occasion of reflection on the sublime mission of the

Ecumenim and Pastoral da Criança
Pastoral da Criança was born from a dream: save
children. Passed 20 years, we see that this dream becomes
a reality at each instant, in many places, reaching
people from many races. It's a true divine kairós,
making happen the reason of Jesus coming: "I came
for that all have life and have it in abundance!"
(Jo 10,10). The - national and international - recognition
proves the efficiency of this Pastoral: several prizes,
innumerous consecrations, gratefulness expressed in
different ways. But, the main prize is to see the life
present on thousand of children, saved by the efficient
action developed by thousands of people, volunteers,
spread by thousands of communities, that, with a lot
of generosity, they face every sort of challenges, showing
that it is possible to construct another possible world,

Pastoral da Criança always has a true story
to share. It is the case of Regina Tomé (support
Pastoral da Criança) that tells us a solidarity
act, where Pastoral da Criança made that a recently
born child come back to his/her mother's arms. [read more]
Course
for babysitters
It was firmed an important partnership between Pastoral
da Criança of Sector/Diocese Uberlândia
and Uberlândia Catholic College at the sense of
create community courses assisting the needed families
of Uberlândia. The first course was of capacitation
to form Babysitters. The course goal is to qualify community
leaders and mothers, assisted by Pastoral da Criança,
to the job market contributing to a better life quality
and citizenship rescue, thus it was constated a big
number of community leaders and mothers followed up
by Pastoral da Criança that were passing by great
financial difficulties, unemployed and without conditions
or references to get a job. Pastoral da Criança
made the selection of candidates, taking in account
those more needed and preoccupied in assist all areas
of Uberlândia municipality. [read more]
José
Francisco dos Santos - came back to life!
José Francisco dos Santos was founded through
a home visit to the community of Barrado Tarrachil,
municipality of Chorrocho, neighbor of Macureré.
The area coordinator found this family when the boy
was 5 months old, with severe malnutrition and dehydration.
With the story of disillusion by the doctor, so said
his mother, the mother was not giving the right care,
because she had no financial conditions to acquire the
necessary food and by not knowing how to take care of
a sick child. And said: "I am just waiting God

Letícia story
On 2000 Pastoral da Criança was beginning its
work on the community Jardim Ouro Preto, São
José dos Pinhais, with only two community leaders:
Eliane and Sirlei. At the home visits, they found a
child on a critical state, needing urgent medical treatment. [read more]
Prenatal
If it exist a suspect of pregnancy must seek for a
health unity nearest to confirm the hypothesis and begin
to follow up the health. The prenatal can assure a healthy
pregnancy and a secure birth. The pregnant have the
right to do six prenatal appointments during all the
pregnancy. [read more]
Afections perinal at the fiest year of life
What are perinatal affections?
They are diseases of the recently born that have the
origin on the perinatal period (seven days after the
birth), even that the death will come later. [read more]
To praise is important
The sincere praise, heard since he/she is a child,
it is capable to transform people's life and make them
happy. Thus, who doesn't like to be valued at what he/she
does well? Even the children collaborate more when they
are recognized for what they do well, even at small

Congress joins Coordination from all over Brazil
Between December 9th to 13th, almost 500 state, sector
and nuclei coordinators joined themselves at Curitiba,
Paraná, to participate at the I Pastoral da Criança
National Congress. [read more]
Child Labro Eradication Program (PETI)
According to International Labor Organization (ILO)
and the International Program for Eradication of the
Infantile Work (Ipec), there are 2,908,341 boys and
girls, between 5 and 14 years old, that work all over
Brazil, to contribute with the family income. In front
of this problem was created the Child Labor Eradication
Program - PETI, that today assists 810 thousand children,
at 2,601 cities. [read more]
Celebration joins throusands of Pastoral da Criança Volunteers
Last December 14th, almost 12 thousand volunteers participated
at the Thanksgiving Celebration for Pastoral da Criança
20th birthday, at Clube Atlético Paranaense Stadium,
at Curitiba, Paraná. It was a moment of great
happiness for community leaders, coordinators, support
and capacitation teams, religious and all the partners
and friends of Pastoral da Criança that, at this
two decades, summed efforts to reduce the infant mortality,
malnutrition and construct a peace culture.

24%
of babies stayed without birth certificate in 2002
Almost 800 thousand babies, the equivalent of a quarter
of Brazilians born in 2002, were not registered at the
legal time - until 90 days after the birth. Without the
civil certificate, they aren't recognized as citizens.

On October 30th, Pastoral da Criança signed a partnership
accord with Maranhão State Government. Pastoral
da Criança National Coordinator, Dr. Zilda Arns
Neumann, met with the governor José Reinaldo Carneiro
Tavares, at ceremony at Palácio dos Leões

GUIDELINE PROPOSAL - South and Southeast indians debate
Food Security
The workshop on food security at Curitiba was the 18th
meeting of a series of already done at other region
in Brazil on 2003. The meeting was promoted by non governmental
entities related with Federal Government Ministries
and State Secretaries, bank institutions and civil society
organizations, among them Pastoral da Criança.

a new agenda for citizenship - 10 years of Loas, IV
Social Assistance National Conference happens at Brasília
on December 7th to 10th 2003. This theme is divided
in 4 sub-themes: Social Assistance Policy Conception
- Conceive the policy to do the right; Management and
Organization - Plan locally to decentralize and democratize
the right; Financing - Assure resources to guarantee
the policy; Social Control - Mobilization and participation
as strategy to strengthen the social control. More information

for the Right to Education does a national mobilization

With the slogan "Winnow
for education: it is time to put the Public Education
at the Center of the Circle", the National
Campaign for the Right to Education promotes, on October
15th, a great mobilization to increase the

Pastoral da Criança national coordinator, Dr.
Zilda Arns Neumann, and the Gol Transportes Aéreos
president, Constantino de Oliveira Júnior,
signed on October 15th 2003, at São
Paulo, a partnership term at which Gol will dispose
R$ 1 million to Pastoral da Criança. [read more]
Income Generation
Project capacitates Pastoral da Criança mothers
Wash, iron, gum, cook, and clean the house. All the
notions to do a good housekeeping job are taught at
Pastoral da Criança housekeeping capacitation
course. The project began on September 2001, at Curitiba
and it already counts with 19 classes. The same experience
happens, since the last year, at Belo Horizonte and,
recently, at Recife. To participate, it is enough to
be a community leader, have his/her children followed
up by Pastoral da Criança or be part of the supporting
group. It is no necessary to be literacied. The project
makes part of Pastoral da Criança income generation
program that aims the employment capacitation. [read more]
The National
Gratuitous Work for Misery and Hunger Overcoming
On October 12th to 19th, occurs
the Gratuitous
Work Mobilization week,
a partnership between the COEB (Comitê de Entidades
no Combate à Fome e pela Vida – Entities Committee
at the Fight Against Hunger and for Life), the CNBB
Gratuitous Work and the Hunger Zero Program, of the
Government. On October 16th, the World’s
Food day, by initiative of FAO, it is previewed
a new phase of World’s Campaign of Fight Against

Rights National Conference
CONANDA - Conselho Nacional dos Direitos da Criança
e do Adolescente (Child and Adolescent Rights National
Council), to deliberate by the happening of V Child
and Adolescent Rights National Conference, elected
the theme: "PACT FOR PEACE – A POSSIBLE CONSTRUCTION"
and propose, in front of the new political picture and
of national mobilization, make a balance advances and
difficulties at the Pact for Peace, result of IV National
Conference, at the expectation to amplify the institutional
and social support for the consolidation of Absolute
Priority principle, praised by 1988 Federal Constitution
and Child and Adolescent Estatute – ECA. V Child and
Adolescent Rights National Conference, will happen on
December 1st to 5th 2003, at Brasília,

Dr. Zilda laments ambassador
Sérgio Vieira de Mello death at Bagdah
Pastoral da Criança laments the death of the
Brazilian Sérgio Vieira de Mello, UNO specially
send to Iraq, and all people that died after attack
of a bomb truck to UNO headquarters, on the afternoon
of August 19th 2003. We believe that there
isn’t in the world a single motive that justifies war
and terrorism, two bad things that generate even more
violence. Thus, we pray that the world understands that
peace is a continuous effort to overcome differences,
preceding at our relations the construction of a culture
of dialogue and comprehension, beginning at the family

Pastoral da Criança celebrates its 20th
Anniversary with a Mass in a Soccer Field
On December 14th, the 200 thousand Pastoral
da Criança volunteers will celebrate its 20th
anniversary. It will be a great moment of happiness
for community leaders, coordinators, coordination and
capacitation crews, bishops, priests and all partners
and friends that, at these two decades, are working
together to reduce infant mortality, malnutrition, illiteracy
and social exclusion among the followed up families.

Zilda Arns launches first Pastoral da Criança
at Indian territory at Roraima
The Malacacheta village, Serra da Lua region, was chosen
to be Pastoral da Criança start at Indian territory
at Roraima State. National coordinator Dr. Zilda Arns
during meeting launched the proposal with Local Health
Council, on July 21st, at the same village.
"My visit here was only to bring the proposal and
show that Pastoral has contributed a lot at the fight
against malnutrition and reduction of infant mortality
at other Indian regions in Brazil", she justified.
After the discussions all the meeting participants approved

Fome Zero (Hunger Zero) – Main actions implemented
Programa Fome Zero (Hunger Zero Program) is composed
of a set of actions that are being implemented by the
Federal Government. The goal is to promote measures
to guarantee food and nutritional security to all Brazilians.
The initiatives involve many ministries, at the three
government spheres (federal, state and municipal) and

AMERICAN INSTITUTIONS DISCUSS PASTORAL DA CRIANÇA
EXPANSION
The expansion and amplification of Pastoral da Criança
at Latin America and Caribe is being discussed today,
at the entity headquarters, at Curitiba. There are gathered
representatives of the regional office of Unicef for
Latin American and Caribe and of Brazil, the Latin American
Ecclesiastic Council, Latin American Religious Council,
Religious Conference of Brazil, Brazilian Agency of
Cooperation/External Relations Ministry, besides members
of Brazil's Pastoral da Criança. The meeting

DA CRIANÇA DELIVERS PROPOSALS TO PT (WORKERS
PARTY) CANDIDATES
Pastoral da Criança elaborated the document "Convocation
to 2002 Election Candidates for the construction of

education, environment, food security, social assistance

the Nobel Peace Prize.
The Nobel Committee, in Oslo, received the document
