Statement by the President of Brazil, Fernando Henrique
Cardoso
(Excerpt from the letter sent to
the Nobel Peace Committee, January 2002)
"If
last year I was honored to appoint your name (to the
Pastoral of the Child), I am doing it once again, and
this time with renewed intensity, since the "Pastoral
da Criança" - an organization that counts
on near 155 thousand agents and volunteers from the
community, and assists more than one million families
and one million and a half poor kids - has only grown
and grown. Acting in Brazil for 18 years in behalf of
the children and the families, the "Pastoral da
Criança " has successfully adapt and expanded
its experience in the country and other countries of
Africa and Latin America. (...)
I
believe that it is more than time to acknowledge all
over the world the merits of this initiative by such
a relevant award as the Nobel Peace Prize. An initiative
that gathers the efforts of the society to accomplish
the most wanted goal by all peoples: the peace. The
peace that must be understood and searched for in its
broader dimension and which translates into fully promoting
and living human dignity by all individuals."
