Besides
preventing violence against the children in the family
and community environment, the Pastoral da Criança
has achieved other solid results, year by year, such
as the reduction of infant mortality to under 13 deaths
per thousand born alive infants in the assisted communities
in 2001. In the same period, according to statistics
by UNICEF for the year of 1999, the national average
was 34.6 deaths per one thousand born alive infants
all over Brazil.
Malnutrition
among Pastoral children was also cut significantly.
Among more than 1.6 million children under age six,
only 6.4% suffer from malnutrition. That means that,
thank to the solidarity work of more than 153 thousand
volunteers - community leaders and members of coordination
and support teams - thousands of kids are saved from
death every year in Brazil, and many others are recovered
from malnutrition.
